The Time Keeper

“Try to imagine a life without timekeeping. You probably can’t. You know the month, the year, the day of the week. There is a clock on your wall or the dashboard of your car. You have a schedule, a calendar, a time for dinner or a movie. Yet all around you, timekeeping is ignored. Birds are not late. A dog does not check its watch. Deer do not fret over passing birthdays. Man alone measures time. Man alone chimes the hour. And, because of this, man alone suffers a paralyzing fear that no other creature endures. A fear of time running out.”

-Mitch Albom, The Time Keeper

There is a reason that our time here on earth is limited. This reason is an important one that you may not realize and in that reason is a world of beauty. Our time is limited so that we can recognize each day as precious. So that we do not take time for granted and can make the most out of every moment. It is limited so that we can savor what we have instead of becoming preoccupied by what we want or what could be. Time is a gift. However, most see it as a curse. People do not appreciate the gift of time, the beauty of time and how time allows us to have a past, a present and a future. It allows us to have memories, hopes and dreams. It allows us to experience a vast variety of emotions over however long a lifetime we are given. It stops everything from happening all at once. Time allows us to every day be visited by the sun and moon no matter what else is going on in the world. Those are two things we can count on every day that will never disappoint. Time allows a change in seasons and a change of self. It allows for goals, planning and to witness the miraculous nature of change. Time allows the possibility for redemption and learning (about both the world, yourself, and different subjects). It allows bonds to be created and it allows freedom with how you choose to spend your time. The freedom to choose how you spend each and every moment of the precious gift of life that you have been given. Tomorrow is never a promise. Make the most of today, of this moment. Let your life be an adventure and allow yourself the ability to live your life instead of it living you and passing you by preoccupied by the constant longing for more time. Even one moment of life is worth it and enough so long as you spend that moment in the right way and take advantage of the opportunity of life and of time. Try to spend an afternoon without worrying about the time, or trying to keep track of time and instead enjoy the present. Enjoy the present moment and the present of time that you have been given. Be grateful and practice gratitude every day. Time is a beautiful gift. Don’t let time slip away.
